Hair Transplant Surgery Procedure

Before the hair transplant procedure

When you come to Dr Paul Cotterill’s hair transplant clinic, he assesses you and offers personalized solutions based on your needs. He doesn't follow a cookie-cutter approach. He listens to you and designs a treatment plan that is agreeable to you. We ask you to come to our office at 7:30 AM on the day of your procedure and offer a relaxed environment so you can wait in peace. You're offered a mild tranquillizer like Valium to calm your nerves and deal with any side effects of the anesthetic.

The strip excision procedure

The hair in the donor area is clipped to a particular length, and both this area and the recipient area are anesthetized. After the anesthetic has taken effect, a specially designed scalpel is used by Dr Paul Cotterill to cut an ellipse of hair-bearing scalp from the donor areas. The ellipse, with the use of a stereoscopic microscope, is then carefully slivered into smaller loaves of hair, which are then further dissected into single or double follicular units (follicular unit family). 'Micrografts' are obtained by slicing the donor tissue into very small sections, regardless of whether the naturally occurring bundles are kept together or not. Dr Paul Cotterill uses microscopic dissection to obtain follicular units on all grafts.

Dissection of the donor grafts

Once the strip graft has been dissected into individual follicular units, Dr Paul Cotterill will personally make each individual recipient site for each follicular unit graft, ensuring proper angle, direction, depth of incision site and spacing between grafts. While Dr Cotterill performs all steps of the surgery by himself, his team of experienced professionals is always there by his side in order to assist him with the planting of grafts in the proper area.

After the procedure

Once the hair transplant surgery has been carried out, the patient is given pain tablets, and Dr Paul Cotterill calls you in the night to assess your condition. You're asked to come back the next day so that the area can be cleaned. While the sutures are removed in 7-10 days, the crusts and scabs are gone by day 10-12.

Some Important Things to Keep in Mind After Your Hair Transplant Surgery

You should take 5-7 days off work to let yourself heal. Any forehead swelling goes down by that time. You're also required to refrain from any physical activity a week after the surgery.

The hair in each graft usually falls out (the roots remain dormant under the skin) 2-3 weeks after surgery.  At three months, the hairs are just breaking through the skin and  beginning to grow.

Six months after the operation, the grafts will be about 1.5 inches long. One can liken the appearance of cosmetic benefits after the surgery to 60% of the benefit at six months, 70% at seven months, 90% at nine months, and full growth and width of the grafts after 12 months.

FAQs

Am I the Right Candidate for Hair Transplantation Surgery?

Is the Treatment for Balding Painful?

No, the treatment itself is not painful. Our patients tell us the only pain they experienced was when the anesthetic was injected or some discomfort the night following the transplant. Dr Paul Cotterill is always present to attend to your needs when carrying out the procedure. Watch our videos if you'd like to get an idea of how the procedure is carried out

Is Hair Transplantation a Costly Procedure?

Hair transplantation surgery is costly, but it is a great investment in one's future happiness, given the final results. The number of sessions required will be determined by the scalp area being treated, the quantity and size of grafts, and the patient's desired hair density. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any other questions.

Will the Treatment Have Any Side Effects?

Minor swelling treatment may occur during and after the procedure. You may experience crusting, small scabs and itching that can last for 7 to 10 days. Some may experience numbness to the scalp, which should also subside within a few weeks to months. Please note that these side effects are typical after the hair transplant surgery. Your hair surgeon will recommend follow-up visits to take care of the side effects by prescribing medication.

Are There Any Complications ?

Hair transplantation, like all other kinds of surgery, carries a risk. However, the risk from hair transplantation procedures is minimal, especially when you have an experienced practitioner like Dr Paul Cotterill. He will have a thorough consultation regarding risks and side effects with the patient.
