Platelet-rich plasma therapy is commonly known as PRP therapy and is a treatment for hair loss in men and women. PRP is a therapeutic option that uses stimulation of the hair follicles to encourage hair growth naturally, using the patient’s own growth factor. PRP hair treatment procedure employs non-surgical treatments to promote hair growth and can be used alone or to complement other hair transplant procedures.

If this is your first time hearing about this kind of treatment, we suggest you schedule a free one-to-one consultation with Dr Paul Cotterill. He will assess your needs carefully and recommend a suitable hair loss treatment plan for you.

What is PRR Therapy?

If you are experiencing hair loss, PRP therapy may offer an alternative to the more common options of hair transplant or hair loss medication. PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is a concentrated form of your own blood that is extracted from your body and used in hair regrowth treatments.

Platelet-rich plasma injections stimulate reparative cells and heal affected areas of the scalp, helping restore hair density. The procedure is relatively quick, and one can return to their activities without limitations. It best suits individuals who prefer a non-surgical approach to treating hair loss and thinning.

Common Signs of Baldness

Excessive hair loss from the scalp is referred to as baldness. Hair loss can happen in many ways and gradually affect your scalp. Signs of hair loss include:

  • Thinning on top of the head: This is the most common type of hair loss and can affect individuals of all ages.

  • Patchy bald spots: Some people lose hair in patches and may lose chunks of hair from the same patch. You may also experience itchiness before the hair falls out.

  • Sudden loosening of hair: Emotional stress can also affect hair loss. You may experience severe hair loss while combing or washing your hair or gentle tugging.

Uses/applications of PRP Hair Treatment

PRP injections are often used to treat the following conditions:

  • Keloid scars, fibromas

  • Post-surgical scars

  • Arthritis

  • Chronic pain syndromes

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Tennis/golfer's elbow

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Ligament sprain/strain

  • Muscle tears

  • Ulcer healing

PRP Hair Treatment in Toronto and How It Works

Growth factor has shown results in encouraging the growth phase of the hair cycle, which can increase your hair volume. According to science, your own platelets encourage this growth by stimulating the stem cells of the hair follicle, so PRP hair treatment may be able to stimulate inactive hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Preparing for a PRP Treatment

Since your own platelets contain your unique growth factor and are key to your PRP therapy, the procedure begins with a blood draw, just like a routine blood test at your doctor’s office. Then we spin your blood in a centrifuge, so that the PRP is separated from the red blood cells, and the plasma is removed at a high concentration.

Then with a local anesthetic to block the nerves in your scalp, the platelet-rich plasma is injected directly into the scalp at the same level as the hair follicles. Usually taking less than an hour, the injections cover every half inch of the area where your hair is thinning. You may choose, with Dr Paul Cotterill’s advice, to have follow-up treatments every 3 to 4 months. You can refer to our FAQs section for more information about our services.

Are You a Good Candidate for PRP Therapy?

If your hair has recently begun noticeably thinning, then you are in the early stages of hair loss and a good candidate for PRP hair treatment for hair loss. As a man or woman with natural hair thinning or loss, you still have an adequate number of active hair follicles, even if they produce wispy hair or no hair at all. If you are generally healthy and have realistic expectations for any hair loss treatment, you are also a good candidate for PRP therapy.

At the same time, we may not recommend PRP therapy for patients who smoke, have low blood pressure, or are on long-term cortisone therapy. We advise postponing PRP therapy or finding another type of hair loss treatment if you:

  • Are preparing for or currently undergoing chemotherapy,

  • Have a recent history of cancer,

  • Have had a recent blood infection or sepsis,

  • Have clotting problems or low platelet counts

Benefits of PRP Hair Treatment for Hair Loss

  • It is a non-surgical and very tolerable procedure. PRP therapy only requires a small amount of blood and injections to complete a treatment session.

  • Strengthen your hair roots.

  • PRP injections increase blood supply to hair follicles that help to trigger natural hair growth.

  • The results of the procedure can be visible within a few weeks.

  • PRP therapy is not known to have any side effects; the mild bruising or tenderness at the injection site does not last long and hence, no recovery time is required.

  • Patients can get back to their regular routine almost immediately after the procedure.
